16 Athletes Advance to Section 8A Meet

In a rare weather anomaly, the Bulldog track team was able to run under sunny skies with warm temperatures.  The new weather seemed to help as many of the Bulldog athletes set personal and team bests in Park Rapids at the Subsection 29 Track Meet on Thursday.
The Bulldogs have 16 athletes that will be competing in 13 events at the Section 8A meet in Mahnomen on June 1.  To qualify for the section, the top four individauls and top two relay teams move on automatically.  Then there are four wildcard slots for the next four best indiduals and two slots for the next best relays from all three subsections.
This year three subsection champions belong to NKB.
The first champion for the Bulldogs was the boys 4 x 800 m relay team.  Sophomore Cody Rankin, freshman Giizhik Wagner, and seniors Keith Shaughnessy and Caleb Schneider combined to win the race in 8:57.16.  The team ran 13 seconds faster than their previous best from last Friday.  Alternates going on for the relay are 8th grader Daniel Jourdan and 7th grader Cameron Eckstrom.
The next to qualify was freshman Logan Adams in the 110 m Hurdles.  He finished in 20.19 and placed 4th.
Later in the meet, senior Caleb Schneider took an early lead in his 800 m run.  He then let fellow senior Jacob Waggoner of Park Rapids break the wind for him before passing with 150 meter to go.  Schneider won the 800 m run with a 2:09.03.
Meanwhile, out at the discus cage, freshman Rachel Fahey dominated her event winning by almost 6.5 feet.  Fahey's winning throw was 99'.
The other athletes heading to sections are the girls' 4 x 800 m relay team of freshmen Christina Grundmeier and Megan Hudec and juniors Paula Pearsall and Kristi Mills, along with the two seventh grade alternates Maddy Cease and Laechen Wagner will move on with their second place finish in 10:53.19.
Also going for the girls is L. Wagner in the 400 m.  She ran 65.91 to take third.  Fahey also qualified in the shot put with a 28' 5" toss earning 3rd.  Grundmeier added a second event as she qualified as a wildcard entrant in the triple jump with a personal best 30' 4.5".
For the boys, freshman Matt Jourdan earned two trips to sections.  He took 2nd in the 1600 m with a 5:04.02 and 3rd in the 3200 m with an 11:13.96.  Classmate G. Wagner also earned a trip in the 3200 placing 4th in the 3200 with an 11:16.88.
Senior Keith Shaughnessy capped off his senior year with two other section qualifying events.  He took 4th in the 400 with a season best 55.26 and 3rd in the high jump.
The boys were able to qualify a second relay as the 4 x 400 m relay qualified as a wildcard even though they finished 4th in the subsection.  The team of Rankin, Williams, Schneider, and Shaughnessy get one more run to try and break the Northome/Kelliher record.  D. Jourdan and Adams will be the alternates.
